20-year-old Coco Gauff surpasses 20 million dollars in career prize money after winning WTA Finals, making her the first tennis player born in 2004 or later, male or female, to reach that prize money milestone.
American tennis player Coco Gauff revealed plans to spend her WTA Tour Finals 2024 prize money. This comes just a day after the 20-year-old won the competition.
Gauff beat China’s Zheng Qinwen in the finals on Saturday (November 9) to win her first WTA season-end tour. Her contest against Qinwen was a thrilling contest that got down to the third set of the match.
The 2023 US Open Winner eventually got the better of her Chinese counterpart in the final set, beating her in the tiebreaker 7-6(7). Owing to this victory, Coco Gauff earned a whopping 4.8 M USD in prize money which took her combined 2024 prize money to 9.25 M USD.
Following this victory, Gauff reacted to a Quinta Brunson meme about the prize money she received after winning the title. She revealed that she will spend her money on XL-size popcorn and slushy in the XMAX movie theatres. Gauff wrote:
“this meme of Ms. Quinta always takes me out, anyways XL popcorn and slushies and we are watching it on XMAX at the theatre with the reclining chairs all on me y’all.”
Coco Gauff recently opened up about her first victory in the WTA Tour Finals. This was the first tour victory for a female American tennis player since Serena Williams won it in 2014.
Gauff took to her X to share some glimpses of her 2024 WTA trophy. In the caption, the 20-year-old stated that this tour victory was for her supporters and also thanked them for staying beside her in difficult times. She also mentioned that she felt ‘nice’ after answering her critics with this win. She wrote:
“muah Also, I know tend to focus on “doubters/haters” but this one is really for all of my supporters! Ya’ll held it down for me win or lose! I thank you for that. I see you and I appreciate you. And I know some of you are a little bit petty like me so it does feel nice to silence them for a bit.”
This was Coco Gauff’s third WTA title in this 2024 season after the China Open and the Auckland Open. The 19-year-old failed to cinch a Grand Slam title this season and her best results included semifinal finishes at the Australian Open and French Open. However, she won the doubles title with her American counterpart, Jessica Pegula at the Roland Garros in June.
