Prince Harry and Meghan Markle recently took a trip to Nigeria, and while it was meant for Harry’s Invictus Games, it had all the makings of a royal tour to the point where it was even dubbed a “faux royal tour.” And while Harry and Meghan spent time talking with the Nigerian government about things like mental health and opportunities for the youth, Harry still reportedly wanted some validation from his family — but none of the royals acknowledged the good he did in the African country.

Back in early May, Harry spent a day in the United Kingdom to attend a ceremony in honor of the Invictus Games. Members of Princess Diana’s family joined him, but seemingly no one from the royal family showed their support; it suggested that tensions were still quite high. From there, Harry immediately departed for Nigeria, where he met up with his wife, Meghan Markle.

During the trip, Harry and Meghan spoke with plenty of people from the African country; it had become the first to join Harry’s Invictus Games. The two spent time embracing the culture while also speaking about mental health, parenthood, and other practical conversations. But the royal family didn’t acknowledge Harry and Meghan’s trip, and that reportedly upset the prince.

“Harry and Meghan see their recent trip to Nigeria as a huge success, but for Harry, every success is another kind of failure while his family refuse to acknowledge his efforts and steadfastly refuse to apologize for everything that has happened in the past,” royal expert Tom Bradby told The Mirror. It seems that Harry still wants that validation and perhaps still holds out hope that things between him and his family will be alright.

Harry and Meghan’s Nigeria tour was great publicity for the couple and for the Invictus Games. But PR expert Lynn Carratt told The Mirror that the trip actually made the royals angry.

“These faux-royal tours could deepen their rift with the royal family, if not handled correctly,” Carratt said. “Their Nigerian tour bared all that hallmarks of a royal tour, which was said to [have] infuriated the palace.” It’s possible there is some speculation here, as royal sources can’t always be trusted. Perhaps King Charles is happy for Harry and Meghan, but if not, then it could only pave the way for even more tension.

Harry and Meghan have almost entirely disassociated from the royal family, though Harry does still support his family when necessary. It’s unlikely that fans will see either of them at this year’s Trooping the Colour ceremony.
