Elise Mertens beats Coco Gauff in Wimbledon doubles quarter-finals
Elise Mertens qualified for the doubles semi-finals at Wimbledon on Tuesday. She and her Taiwanese partner Hsieh Su-Wei defeated the American duo of Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula 6-2, 6-1 in just one hour and two minutes.
Gauff and Pegula are ranked second and sixth in the world respectively, according to the WTA singles rankings. In the WTA doubles rankings, meanwhile, Mertens is considered the best player in the world, followed by Hshieh in second place.
For a place in the final of the oldest tennis tournament in the world, Mertens and Hsieh will face either the Czech-American duo of Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend or the Ukrainian-Latvian duo of Lyudmyla Kichenok and Jelena Ostapenko, depending on who wins the quarter-finals.
In 2021, Mertens won Wimbledon for the first time with Hsieh. The last two years – 2022 with Zhang Shuai and 2023 with Storm Hunter – Mertens lost in the final. Hsieh has won no less than eight Grand Slams in her career.
The 28-year-old Mertens was less successful in the singles. She went out in the second round after a 6-1 6-2 defeat to Emma Raducanu.
