“Legendary stuff” – Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff’s coach & tennis world amazed by Carlos Alcaraz’s 2nd Wimbledon triumph against Novak Djokovic
Carlos Alcaraz’s emphatic victory over Novak Djokovic at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships stunned the tennis world. Many notable personalities, including Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and Serena Williams’ ex-coach Rennae Stubbs, shared their amazement on social media.
Alcaraz, the defending champion, crushed seven-time Wimbledon winner Djokovic 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (4) in the final on Sunday. The Spaniard required four championship points to get the job done. This was his third victory over the Serbian player in their six-match rivalry. His previous win came in last year’s final, a five-set thriller.
Carlos Alcaraz, now a four-time Grand Slam champion, also completed the ‘Channel Slam,’ which means winning the French Open and the Wimbledon Championships in the same calendar year. Just last month the World No. 3 won his first title on the claycourts in Paris by beating Alexander Zverev in a tightly contested five-setter. With that victory, he became the youngest man in history to complete the ‘Surface Slam.’
With his latest triumph at SW19, the Spaniard has joined the likes of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Bjorn Borg, and Rod Laver as only the sixth man to achieve the ‘Channel Slam’ feat. On the women’s side, Steffi Graf, Serena Williams, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Billie Jean King, and Margaret Court have bagged the honor.
Several tennis players were amazed by the 21-year-old’s remarkable achievements in his young career. World No. 1 Iga Swiatek congratulated him and the women’s singles champion, Barbora Krejcikova, on X.
“Huuuge congratulations @BKrejcikova and @carlosalcaraz for amazing two weeks and your titles!” she wrote.
Serena Williams’ ex-coach Rennae Subbs said:
“Wow @carlosalcaraz is one special young talent! I never thought i would see a player as great as Novak, Rafa & Roger but there is no doubt in my mind this kid actually might get to 20 as well. Just phenomenal! @DjokerNole has set the bar so high and this kid is showing up for it.”
Coco Gauff’s coach Brad Gilbert, too, was impressed by the former World No. 1’s rapid success.
“Holy Toledo what and effort from Escape from Alcaraz @carlosalcaraz winning his 2nd @Wimbledon. and the 6th man in open era to pull off the European double at 21 legendary stuff,” he wrote.
