Paris Olympics: “You are the pride of America.” COCO GAUFF to the US Olympic team after another great display by the gymnastic team.
Coco Gauff has showered praise on Simone Biles, Rebeca Andrade, and Jordan Chiles for creating history by securing the first all-Black gymnastics podium in Olympic history. While Biles, Andrade, and Chiles are seasoned Olympians, Gauff is a debutant and shared the honor of being the U.S. flag bearer with LeBron James at the opening ceremony.
On Monday, Gauff shared an ESPN post on her Instagram story showcasing Biles and Chiles exchanging handshakes with Andrade. Biles earned the silver medal, Chiles took home the bronze, and Andrade claimed gold.
“#Blackgirlmagic,” Gauff wrote.
Gauff represented the United States in women’s singles, doubles, and mixed doubles tennis. Her singles campaign ended in the third round against Croatia’s Donna Vekic.
Partnering with Jessica Pegula in doubles, the 20-year-old was eliminated in the second round by the Czech duo of Linda Nosková and Karolína Muchová. In the mixed doubles category, Gauff and her partner, Taylor Fritz, fell to Canada’s Félix Auger-Aliassime and Gabriela Dabrowski in the quarterfinals.
Coco Gauff, the top seed, will begin her 2024 Canadian Open campaign on Wednesday, August 7. She will compete alongside defending champion Jessica Pegula, World No. 3 Aryna Sabalenka, Jelena Ostapenko, Madison Keys, Daria Kasatkina, Victoria Azarenka, and other WTA stars.
Last season, Gauff defeated Katie Boulter and Markéta Vondroušová in the second and third rounds before being knocked out in the quarterfinals by eventual winner Jessica Pegula. This year, she will be aiming to improve on her best finish (quarterfinal), which she also achieved in 2021 and 2022.
Gauff’s experience in the doubles category has been more successful. In 2022, the 20-year-old and her compatriot Jessica Pegula defeated Nicole Melichar-Martínez and Ellen Perez in the final to lift the title.Gauff is having a stellar season, currently holding a career-high ranking of No. 2 on the WTA tour. She won the ASB Classic in January and partnered with Kateřina Siniaková to win the women’s doubles at the French Open. Additionally, she reached the semifinals at the Australian Open, Italian Open, and Indian Wells Masters. In total, she reached the semifinals at the Australian Open, Italian Open, and Indian Wells Masters. In total, she has won 35 matches and lost 11 during the course of the season.
