Coco Gauff keeps number two spot in WTA rankings after Aryna Sabalenka’s defeat in Canadian Open quarterfinal
America’s young tennis star Coco Gauff has managed to keep her number two spot in WTA rankings, despite having a disappointing outing in the Canadian Open. The 20-year-old is already regarded as one of the best players currently playing in women’s tennis in the singles category.
Gauff is currently placed second of the WTA rankings. However, she was in danger of losing the spot after having a poor outing in the Canadian Open where she was knocked out of the mega-event after losing in the second round to Russia’s Diana Shnaider in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-1.
That was down to world number three Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka who lost in the quarterfinal of the Canadian Open to Amanda Anisimova in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-2. As things stand, Gauff remains second in the WTA rankings with 7,703 points whereas Sabalenka is placed third with 7,256 points. Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan remains fourth in the WTA rankings with 6,376 points. Overall, Gauff has been going through mixed campaign. Out of the three Grand Slams, she has managed to play in the semifinal of two but has failed to go all the way and win any mega-event. She was knocked out from the Australian Open after losing in the semifinal to Sabalenka in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 6-4.
At the French Open, she came second-best in the semifinal against world number one Iga Swiatek in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-4. At Wimbledon, Gauff’s journey ended in the fourth round as she lost to fellow American Emma Navarro in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-3. Gauff, before taking part in the Canadian Open, represented Team USA at the Paris Olympics and participated in the singles, doubles and mixed doubles categories. However, she failed to win any medal for her country.
