Despite her billionaire status, Emma has much respect for childhood friend Coco Gauff. In a post match press briefing, Emma Navarro did not hide her respect and admiration for Coco Gauff…”I have a ton of respect for her.”
Emma Navarro’s giant-killing run at the All England Club has continued with the 19th-seeded American defeating compatriot Coco Gauff in straight sets on Monday (AEST).
Navarro prevailed 6-4, 6-3 in one hour and 14 minutes to reach the quarter finals at a major for the first time.
With world No.1 Iga Swiatek and No.5 Jessica Pegula already bundled out of Wimbledon, only two of the top 10 ranked women’s players are left in the tournament — Elena Rybakina and Jasmine Paolini.
Off the back of her maiden grand slam title at last year’s US Open, world No.2 Gauff had progressed to the final eight at both the Australian Open and Roland-Garros earlier this year.
However, the 20-year-old’s struggles on grass continued having never progressed further than the fourth round at Wimbledon from five attempts.
The win continues Navarro’s outstanding run of form at the tournament after she eliminated four-time grand slam champion Naomi Osaka in the second round.
The 23-year-old staged a consistent performance against Gauff, converting three break-point opportunities and winning 100 per cent of her net points.
Navarro clinched her first WTA singles title in January when she claimed the Hobart International crown. Adding to her breakout season, she went on to reach the third round at the Australian Open and the fourth round at Roland-Garros.
“I think I played really aggressively. Coco’s an amazing player and I have a ton of respect for her,” Navarro said post-match.
Navarro is the daughter of Kelly and Ben Navarro — the latter being the billionaire founder and chief executive officer of Sherman Financial Group and its affiliate Credit One.
Ben Navarro is the son of former college football coach Frank Navarro, who held tenures at Williams College, Columbia, Wabash College and Princeton.
His net worth is reportedly worth over $2.2 billion.
