“I am ready to go all the way to make America proud”…COCO GAUFF on readiness to defend her title…See details
After her victory against Elina Svitolina, the young American analyzed her feelings for having reached the 4th round of the US Open.
The defense of the US Open will go through a complicated 4th round against her countrywoman Emma Navarro, but Coco Gauff will try in every way to hold on to – for the first time in her career – a Grand Slam tournament. This can generate pressure that is difficult to handle, but the young American, however, believes she is a different player compared to last year and wants to think only about the next step to take to achieve the big goal.
In the match won in a comeback against Elina Svitolina – the one that allowed her to access the round of 16 of the US Open – the American perhaps let go of some of the negativity that has characterized her last few months, completing an important comeback.
“I don’t feel any different pressure than any other tournament. It’s true that the week before I experienced some tension, but since the tournament started my mental state has been completely different. I just want to think match by match. I know I’m still far from my goal, but what I won’t do is impose the obligation to win this tournament on myself. Knowing that I’ve already won the US Open gives me a lot of confidence,” she explained at the press conference.
Coco then explained that she feels like a better tennis player, compared to last season, crowned with her first historic Slam triumph right at Flushing Meadows.
“I feel like a better tennis player than last year. The feeling is that in 2023 I triumphed here without playing my best tennis. The victory against Svitolina was my best match on hard courts in the last year. Overcoming this tough test strengthens my level of confidence and makes me an even more difficult tennis player for my rivals to beat,” she added, before confessing: “Every night I read the Bible and I have a personal diary where I write down my feelings. The most important thing is to learn from your mistakes, but at the same time not to have regrets.”
