Just like Taylor Townsend at Wimbledon, Coco Gauff won her first Grand Slam doubles title with Katerina Siniakova
Coco Gauff, Ben Shelton, and several other colleagues of Taylor Townsend were thrilled as she clinched her maiden Grand Slam title at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. The American player partnered with World No. 5 Katerina Siniakova to win the women’s doubles event.
Townsend and Siniakova did not earn the desired result in women’s singles; the former lost to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the opener, and the latter was knocked out by Yulia Putintseva in the second round. The pair, though, aced the test in women’s doubles, which was their third tournament together.
After crushing the top-seeded team of Elise Mertens and defending champion Hsieh Su-wei in the semifinals, the Czech-American duo toppled second seeds Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe 7-6 (5), 7-6 (1) on Saturday, July 13.
Doing so, Taylor Townsend lifted her maiden Grand Slam trophy, having fallen short in the finals of the 2022 US Open and the 2023 French Open. Meanwhile, for Katerina Siniakova, this was her ninth women’s doubles trophy at a Major. She previously won the title twice at Wimbledon, partnering this year’s singles champion, Barbora Krejcikova (2018, 2022).
In her post-match interview, an emotional Townsend expressed her delight at sharing the court with a renowned champion such as Siniakova. She also hilariously recalled how the fellow 28-year-olds, Siniakova and Krejcikova, beat her and Caty McNally in the 2022 US Open final.
“I’m so fortunate that we were able to team up. She’s amazing; has been on this stage many times before. In my first-ever Grand Slam final, she kicked my butt and it stung. So I was like I’m really glad we’re on the same side of the net,” the American said.
Taylor Townsend’s compatriots, Coco Gauff, Ben Shelton, Madison Keys, and Christopher Eubanks, were delighted by her “deserved” win.
“Yea Tay! @tay_taytownsend,” Ben Shelton wrote on Instagram.
“So happy for them especially 1st time for @tay_taytownsend !”
Coco Gauff wrote.
“Congrats girlsss @tay_taytownsend @siniakovakaterina.”
2023 Wimbledon quarterfinalist Eubanks showed his support by saying:
“TAYLOR TOWNSEND IS A WIMBLEDON CHAMPION!!!! You deserve this Tay!!!! CONGRATS!!!! @TaylorTownsend.”
“!!! @tay_townsend Congratulations to you and @siniakovakaterina,” two-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist Madison Keys wrote.
