My Mom Is Such a Strong Woman’- Venus Williams Honors Mother Oracene’s Wisdom as She Shatters Stereotypes to Empower Generations
Venus Williams credits her mother, Oracene Price, as the unwavering pillar behind her success. Through every triumph and setback, Oracene’s support has been a guiding force, shaping Venus into the champion she is today. Reflecting on her journey, Venus highlighted the importance of women supporting women, using her mother as a prime example of the transformative power of encouragement.
Venus Williams and WNBA player Cameron Brink have teamed up for a motivational project to commemorate the Equal Credit Opportunity Act’s (ECOA) 50th anniversary. Passed in 1974, this historic law guaranteed that people—especially women—could no longer be refused credit based on their marital status or gender. Venus and Brink hope to increase awareness of the continued significance of financial empowerment and equality through this partnership.
Talking about this initiative with people, she said, “It’s hard to really even fathom in this day and age that a woman would need a male co-signer. My mom is such a strong woman, I can’t imagine her needing a male co-signer in the ’70s to sign anything for her.” Venus Williams also noted she is “really grateful” for her mother Oracene Price’s emphasis on the value of mental health in raising her children. Venus pointed out how her mother fostered their mental fortitude in addition to physical accomplishments.
“My mom always told us that — you have to work on your mental strength. That was her theory of raising kids… you also have to help them mentally be ready and prepared,” Williams shared. Venus Williams and her siblings have been greatly shaped by this early emphasis on mental health, which has given them the skills necessary to face obstacles in their personal and professional lives with courage and clarity. Earlier this year, Venus offered some excellent advice from her mother. Emphasizing the importance of financial knowledge, Venus demonstrated how Oracene’s teachings extended to useful life skills like budgeting.
Venus Williams reveals Oracene’s ‘priceless’ advice
When Venus Williams appeared on the Sofi talk show earlier this year, she was asked about the most important lessons she had learned in life. Looking back on her childhood, Venus underlined that it was her mother Oracene Price teaching her the value of “not living above her means.” She explained, “I think the most important lesson was not to live above your means. My mom was a big one on that. She was very serious about living whatever within the means and not showing off with money.”
Furthermore, Venus noted, “I was always taught not to talk about money, which I think to a degree, is important.” The Williams sisters credit their parents for a large portion of their success. For those who are unfamiliar with their path, their father, Richard Williams, was a major mentor and professional counselor, but Oracene’s consistent influence was more important in molding their outlook and sense of financial responsibility.
