World No. 1 Iga Swiatek, former US Open champion Daniil Medvedev, Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen, and World No. 10 Alex de Minaur were among the prominent names to bow out in the quarterfinals. All of them earned $530,000 for their efforts.
World No. 1 Iga Swiatek, former US Open champion Daniil Medvedev, Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen, and World No. 10 Alex de Minaur were among the prominent names to bow out in the quarterfinals. All of them earned $530,000 for their efforts.
Swiatek was shown the door by Jessica Pegula, who beat her 6-2, 6-4. Since winning the US Open two years ago, the Pole hasn’t advanced to the semifinals of a Major outside of the French Open. Medvedev came up short against the top-ranked Jannik Sinner for the third time this season.
Medvedev lost to the Italian 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4, and it marked his first quarterfinal exit in New York. Zheng was outplayed by Aryna Sabalenka in a rematch of their Australian Open final from January and was soundly beaten 6-1, 6-2. De Minaur went down 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 against Jack Draper.
Alexander Zverev, Grigor Dimitrov, Beatriz Haddad Maia, and Paula Badosa were the other players to exit in the quarterfinals. The German lost to Taylor Fritz in four sets, while Dimitrov injured himself and threw in the towel in the fourth set during his showdown against Frances Tiafoe.
Karolina Muchova beat Haddad Maia 6-1, 6-4, while Badosa lost to Emma Navarro 6-2, 7-5 after leading 5-1 in the second set. Players have received more prize money for losing in the quarterfinals this time compared to last year. This year’s sum of $530,000 is $75,000 more than the $455,000 offered last year.
Defending champion Coco Gauff was knocked out by Emma Navarro in the fourth round. This marked the second straight Major where the 20-year-old was beaten by her compatriot. She previously lost to her in the fourth round of Wimbledon as well.
While Gauff lost to Navarro in straight sets at the All England Club, she put up more of a fight at the US Open. She pushed her to three sets but eventually lost the match 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. She was ranked No. 3 before the start of the season’s final Major, and will now be ranked No. 6 when the rankings are released next week.Gauff earned $325,000 for her fourth-round appearance this time. This is a significant downgrade in terms of payday for the young American, who received $3 million as the champion last year.
Tommy Paul, Casper Ruud, Andrey Rublev, Caroline Wozniacki, Jasmine Paolini, and Donna Vekic were among the other players to lose in the fourth round. All of them earned the same amount as Gauff for their efforts.
