Songwriter, Movie Mogul…Firefighter? Video Shows Taylor Swift Putting Out Fire in Her Kitchen as Cat Keeps Watch
Taylor Swift has racked up quite the impressive résumé — a self-made billionaire with chart-dominating albums that earn dozens of awards, the highest-grossing concert film of all time, and an international tour that’s boosting the economy in every city she visits — and she can now add “firefighter” to that list.
Swift is well known for partnering with her musician friends. Her last two albums included songs featuring Lana Del Rey, Ice Spice, Florence Welch, and Post Malone, and she’s contributed tracks to other artists’ albums as well.
One of those friends is Gracie Abrams, daughter of filmmaker J.J. Abrams, who released a new album on Friday titled The Secret of Us. Swift is a guest on a song called “Us,” as well being one of the producers of the album along with her frequent collaborators, Aaron Dessner and Jack Antonoff. (If you thought the Marvel Cinematic Universe was complex, take a dive down the Wikipedia rabbit hole of the Swiftean Musical Universe some lazy Sunday afternoon.)
To promote the song and album, Abrams posted two videos on her Instagram page of her and Swift. The first shows the two working on the song “Us” through the late hours of the night with Abrams seated at a piano and Swift standing beside her as they sing and workshop the lyrics.
The second video shows their songwriting session getting derailed when a fire broke out in Swift’s kitchen at her Tribeca apartment.
As the video (apparently taken on Abrams’ phone) begins, something on the counter is in flames as Abrams narrates. According to TMZ, Abrams had previously mentioned the fire incident but this was the first time the video had been posted. The fire apparently started when a candle left burning tipped over.
Swift is seen getting a fire extinguisher and checking with Abrams on what to do.
“I think we’re going to die,” jokes Swift. “No, we’re not going to die,” replies Abrams, before wisely pointing out that kitchen fires should never be put out with water (she’s right — water and oil do not mix, and adding water to flaming oil can cause it to rapidly spread or even convert the water to steam and explode into a flaming ball of burning oil. Yikes.)
Swift temporarily struggles to get the fire extinguisher started, exclaiming “Bitch!” before finally getting it to burst the extinguishing agent at the fire and put it out. She then stands there stunned for a few moments as Abrams chuckles in relief.
“Our purses are ruined,” says Swift as smoke drifts through the room. “And my shoes. And the whole room, I think.”
“Smells really good though,” Abrams jokes as she coughs a bit. She then turns the camera to the doorway where Benjamin Button, one of Swift’s three cats, has approached to check out the chaotic scene.
“Writing this entire song from 2am to 6am was some of the most fun I’ve ever had in my life,” wrote Abrams in the caption on her post. “@taylorswift now we know how to use a fire extinguisher. I love you.”
